Shala owner and yoga teacher Ara Lyman shares some thoughts on what makes yoga so wonderful, and why Shala Living Yoga is a great place to start or deepen your current practice:

First of all, how long have you practiced yoga, and how did you first start?

AL: I’ve been practicing yoga since about 2002. Due to some health issues, I was motivated to try it. I started with a VHS tape, some books from the library and just loved it. I felt so much better! I signed up for classes with an Iyengar inspired teacher shortly after, and was hooked.

What makes Shala Living Yoga unique? What is your favorite thing about this studio?

AL: The Shala really carries the heart of yoga here in Spokane. We have evolved with different owners and teachers over the last 17 years. We have a deep connection to the history and community of yoga here. Plus, our space has always been known for its incredible beauty and unique 2 room studios. Typically studios in this wonderful town have one room for yoga, but Shala is spacious and has two separate rooms! One large room with so much natural light and a beautiful mural of clouds. You feel like you are floating there. It’s not only a gorgeous studio, but very inviting. The cushy Zebra floors are accommodating to our bones and joints and the far infrared heat is healing and detoxifying. It really is a state-of-the-art hot yoga room. Our smaller room has beautiful abstract murals and is much more introspective and darker. This room is great for smaller, more gentle non-heated classes. My favorite thing about the studio is the students. I have met the nicest, warmest and most friendly faces teaching in this space. The teachers are pretty wonderful too!

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about trying yoga?

AL: I’d say, try to come as much as you can with our intro offer and try as many different classes as you can to find the right fit for you and ask the teachers questions. I speak for many of us when I say that we want to hear from you! We want you to love yoga as much as we do. And, of course, have fun.

We hope you will join us on the 28th! Light refreshments, and lots of laughs, will be provided!
