Ghosh Immersion Weekend

  • Shala Living Yoga 412 West Boone Avenue Spokane, WA, 99201 United States (map)

Welcome to our Ghosh Immersion Weekend at Shala! Our team is thrilled to have you here and share this incredible yoga experience with you.

Imagine a yoga practice that not only strengthens your body but also calms your mind. Ghosh Yoga, a tradition first taught by Bishnu Charan Ghosh, has been refined and passed down through the years, and now you can experience it for yourself. Ghosh Yoga combines simple therapeutic exercises with various postures to achieve a balance of strength, grace, and control. From the tips of your toes to the corners of your eyes, Ghosh Yoga is designed to mobilize and strengthen every area of your body. But it's not just about the body - this practice is also about finding stillness in the mind. Come and discover what this ancient practice can do for you.

This weekend is designed to help you discover every aspect of your yoga practice and connect with the deeper intricacies beyond the mat. Through our workshops, lectures and clinics, you'll have the opportunity to take your education to the next level and immerse yourself in the world of yoga. Allow yourself to fully let go and embrace this journey —we promise it will be truly transformative.

Come for the whole weekend, single day or single workshop—we’d love to have you no matter what!

SCHEDULE:

Friday: Foundations of 26&2  5-7:30 p.m.

We are always practicing something. Often we are building bad habits that we don't realize and moving farther away from the goals of our practice. In this workshop, we refine the basics of our practice to make sure we are on the right path. We will look into how to practice for maximum gain. After talking about practice techniques, we will focus on how to breathe correctly and how to correctly use our muscles. You will leave with your postures feeling easier, a better understanding of where to focus your effort and with an understanding of how to make progress. This workshop will include a lecture, a chance for questions and a full practice. All levels.

Saturday: 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

Breath, Abs & Glutes: 8-10:30 a.m. Understanding the function of the breath, abs and glutes is essential to physical practice. In this workshop, we explore the parts of breathing and examine how the physicality of breathing can work with (or against) us in asana practice. We breakdown the idea of the "core" to understand how the abs and glutes function, and how to access them for proper use. You'll leave this workshop feeling both more strong and stable, but also with more depth and flexibility in your postures.

Bending the spine: 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Forward and backward bending postures are the gems of an asana practice. They create movement in the spine leading to better posture, circulation, digestion and greater energy. In this all levels class we will explore effective engagement of the abdominal and back muscles (making your postures feel easier!) and learn how the combination of the spinal movements balance the nervous system. You will learn how to adjust your postures based on your current mobility, and leave knowing how to get the most out of your practice.

History of Modern Yoga: 4-6:30 p.m. Explore the history of Ghosh yoga beginning from its origins in Kolkata, India. Learn how this lineage evolved out of body building and therapy to what is practiced today. You will become familiar with the great students of Bishnu Ghosh and explore concepts recognizable to practitioners of modern yoga.

Sunday: 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Building balance, 8-10:30 a.m. An all levels class. Learn how the feet and legs are designed to transfer weight and hold us in balance. Examine the workings of the knees and hips to understand how to carry the body with stability and ease. We will explore "flat feet" and "locking the knee," leaving you with a better understanding for how weight and balance are handled by the body, especially when standing on one leg. Practice will include multiple sets of standing postures, plus additional explanations, preparations and exercises. You will leave this class with better stability, feeling energized and in balance!

Advancing 26&2, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Progress beyond beginning practices and concepts with this immersion. We will discuss what it means to be an intermediate and advanced yogi, including practice philosophy and how to use the body and mind with more detail. Asana practice work toward Arm Balancing & Inversion, Full Backbending, and Leg Behind the Head. Practice will conclude with Pranayama: breathing exercises that are the next step beyond Asana in a yogi's progress.
